EDDN 634 - Basic Reading and Writing Instruction: Teaching Reading and Writing for Second Language Learners
This course provides an understanding of literacy issues specific to English language learners, as well as strategies and techniques for teaching reading and writing to these students. Key concepts include the relationship between first language literacy and L2 literacy development; standards-based reading and writing instruction; principles of phonics, structural analysis, and sight words; process writing; and the incorporation of technology. Includes 5 hours of fieldwork.

Welcome to our course! I am very excited to begin our research into the ways we can teach literacy to English Language Learners and help move them from L1 to L2! This welcome page is your overview of the course, with assignments and required textbooks so you can start planning and ordering required textbooks.

This course provides an understanding of literacy issues specific to English Language Learners (ELLs), as well as the most effective strategies and techniques for teaching reading and writing to these students. Some key concepts in the course include: The relationship between first language literacy and L2 literacy development; standards-based reading and writing instruction; principles of phonics, structural analysis, and sight words; process writing; teaching basic literacy in a cultural context and the incorporation of technology.

Before we begin the course, you must download and print the course syllabus, which will be your guide throughout the next 11 weeks. Within the syllabus, you will find the assignment rubrics which, if read carefully, will ensure you earn the highest possible credit on each required task. On the Canvas page, you will see a column on the left side with all the tabs you will need to navigate the course. Go to “Getting Started” to locate your syllabus, the course calendar, and your discussion groups. Go to Session Folders to look over your assigned course readings and guiding questions. Then go to the Discussion Board to find each session. These materials will be posted later.

A caution about final grades: Due to Touro policies I can not give an incomplete at the end of the semester except for documented, serious events in your life. An incomplete has to be approved by our Dean, not by me.

Your Reflective Journals must follow the template exactly and come with a substantial rubric and handbook. Both the rubric and handbook are detailed and will guide you in writing your reflective journal. You need to set aside time for your reflective journals. More on that later.
