Why Fiction?
Fiction or story telling has been around for a very long-time way before we began to
write down stories. The oldest fictional story that was written was the “Epic of Gilgamesh”
which was recorded over 5,000 years ago. The author wanted to convey a message to both the
young and old readers within the Mesopotamian world. Many people have always wondered
what the purpose of fiction is. Fiction has a variety of purposes and because of those purposes’
fiction is important in today’s society. One purpose would be to learn a lesson or for an author to
convey a message to the reader. There are millions of stories that have been created not only for
the sole purpose of the reader’s enjoyment but also to send the reader a message or lesson that
may help the reader in the long run if they ever encounter the same situation. The next purpose
of fiction would be an expression of feelings. Sometimes humans have a hard time trying to
express how they feel or sometimes they don’t have someone to talk to in order to express those
feelings. Therefore, they turn to fiction as an outlet to feel better and express themselves in a way
that they normally cannot in the real world. The final purpose of fiction would be for
entertainment. Some of the best creations were made from entertainment purposes. Fiction helps
to dilute boredom and enhance imagination. A person’s imagination is one of the best creations.
Without imagination and fiction, we wouldn’t have movies, literature, and any other form of
entertainment that we have today.
